Here we provide you with two very interesting facts of the NFL Lore from games played before the 80’s since the foundation of the NFL:
In the 1930’s
· Portsmouth Spartans vs. Chicago Bears, 1932 NFL Playoff Game: Severe blizzards and terrible cold weather forced the National Football League to move indoors an NFL Playoff game at the Chicago Stadium. Several rules had to be adapted to the size of the stadium including an 80-yard long field.
In the 1940’s
- Washington Redskins vs. Cleveland Rams, 1945 NFL Championship Game: The Rams scored a safety and then, Redskins quarterback Sammy Baugh, hit the goal from his own end zone. The two points was the margin of victory as the Rams won 15-14. After this incredible moment when a forward pass thrown from one’s own end zone hits the goal posts, it is ruled incomplete.
In the 1950’s
- Who can forget The Greatest Game Ever Played? The match was Baltimore Colts vs. New York Giants during the first “sudden death” overtime in NFL history, Fullback Alan Ameche’s 1-yard touchdown run gives the Colts a 23-17.
In the 1960’s
- Dallas Cowboys vs. Green Bay Packers, NFL Championship game: Called the Iced bowl since the temperature was reported at -13 degrees Fahrenheit.
In the 1970’s
The Immaculate Reception (also referred to as the Immaculate Deception): Oakland Raiders vs. Pittsburgh Steelers: Pittsburgh trailed Oakland 7-6 and with 22 seconds remaining in the game, Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw threw the ball toward fullback Frenchy Fuqua; the ball bounced into the air as Fuqua collided with Raiders safety Jack Tatum. It was caught by Steelers running back Franco Harris, who ran the rest of the way downfield to score a touchdown that gave the Steelers a 12-7 lead with five seconds remaining in the game.
