NFL Teams’ Names: The roots of NFL picks on nicknames.

By priceperheadcallcenterservice

Digging up the NFL history and found out about many different subjects, one in particular caught my attention since it was such a fun fact: how did the NFL pick the names of the teams? After a little research I came across the answer to most of the NFL teams’ name selection process, yet I have only chosen the curious ones on this particular NFL list:

Chicago Bears: Since the baseball team was named “Cubs” the more rugged professional sports team (meaning the NFL) should be known as “The Bears”.

Buffalo Bills: William F. Cody was known as “Buffalo Bill” because he provided the buffalo meat supply to the Kansas Pacific Rail Road workers.” The name was chosen after a contest in 1946.

CLEVELAND BROWNS: Their first coach was Paul Brown. That is the entire history of this NFL team name.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: This name came from a radio-sponsored competition in 1974. The Buccaneers was the winner, beating out such noble competitors as Buzzards, Sea Horses and (yes) Mafia. How weird could it be for the already blurry NFL industry to have a team named “Mafia”?

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS: The previous name was “The Normals”, not a very fierce name for an American Football team. The name was changed around 1922 to “The Cardinals” due to the maroon color of their uniform, which resembles the bird’s colorful feathers.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS: The name was picked to honor Kansas City mayor Roe “The Chief” Bartle for his efforts in securing the team by enlarging the Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium and guaranteed three times as many season ticket sales as his club had in Dallas.

DALLAS COWBOYS: “The Rangers” was actually the first name suggested. The NFL club went with Cowboys since Rangers might cause confusion with a local minor-league team of the same name.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ers: Owner Anthony J. Morabito chose this name because it reflected San Francisco’s link to the California Gold Rush. The 49ers kept the name when they joined the NFL in 1950.
