The Oklahoma Supersonics?
After more than 40 years it appears that now we will have to get used to this huge change. The Seattle Supersonics is now part of the past after Seattle has agreed to sell their NBA team for a huge amount of 45 million dollars. Also Clay Bennet has agreed to add a nice 30 million dollars more if the city cannot find another NBA team to play for them in 5 years. However the name of the team and the colors that have represented them during all this time will remain in Seattle.
This decision was finalized right before a federal judge pronounced his decision about the terrible dispute the city has been having with the Supersonics due to expensive remodeling work needed on the Key Arena Stadium.
Clay Bennet stated that he regrets the fact he was not able to comply with giving Seattle a proper building and apologized to the Seattle fans. The Supersonics will now play next Basketball season at Oklahoma City. The NBA Commissioner David Stern has also given declarations to the media, stating that he is sure that Seattle will recover soon and will be easy for to get another team playing for the NBA very soon.
Supersonics fans are of course impressed with the resolution and we will have to check out next NBA season to see how these big changes behaves on the Supersonics performance on the court. According to the team’s new owners, the Sonics‘ franchise history will be “shared” between the Oklahoma City team and any future Seattle team.
The Supersonics were part of the National Basketball Association (NBA) since 1967 and are the only team of the three major men’s professional sports teams in Seattle to win a championship. We are sure of two things: that the former Supersonics team embraces this new change and succeeds playing for Oklahoma City and that Seattle finds a new professional Basketball team to play for the City of Seattle soon. As for the moment, the City will have to fix the Key Arena to start the search for the new Seattle Supersonics… hopefully this will not translate to another so-boring reality show.
